An investigation started today into the cause of a fire which ripped through the roof of a city restaurant in one of Norwich’s most historic areas.

Up to 50 firefighters tackled the blaze at Zizzi in Norwich, close to Norwich Cathedral, which started at about noon on Tuesday.

A formal investigation into the cause of the fire, which is expected to take two days, got underway today after it was initially delayed because the building was declared unsafe.

Although it will be some time before the cause of the fire is established a Norfolk police spokesman has said the blaze is not being treated as suspicious.

Crowds of people stood by and watched as huge plumes of smoke rose from the building and could be seen and smelt across the city.

Ten crews and supporting units attended the scene in total and Tombland was shut off to all other traffic until 3pm. Zizzi and all of the surrounding buildings were evacuated and no-one was believed to be injured.
