Many more commuters would use trains if improvements were made to the service, according to a new survey.

One in five commuters in the East of England spends more than an hour commuting to work each morning.

The same study, by Siemens, found that 65pc of weary workers were not happy with the daily grind of getting to the office.

It found 47pc of commuters who do not currently commute by rail would do so if improvements were made.

Among the improvements desired were more space on board and greater reliability, higher speed connections and technology to send important information about the service to passengers at the station ahead of their journey.

Steve Scrimshaw, managing director of Siemens Mobility Rolling Stock, said: “Trains produce far less CO2 emissions than cars, so the more people that can be encouraged to take to the tracks, the better for the environment.

“Commuters in the East say that they are willing to get out of their cars and find greener ways to travel, but only if their expectations are met.”
