The ongoing saga to build an Aldi at the busy Longwater retail park has hit a new issue with neighbours complaining about the “dangerous” widening of a path.

Work carried out by Aldi contractors has involved the expanding of the pavement at William Frost Way – which is part of the supermarket’s planning conditions to make it wide enough for cyclists and pedestrians to share.

Drivers, however, are saying that only part of the work has been done, leading to a small section of the pavement protruding into the road which could cause an accident.

Joanna de Vincentiis, who lives in Bowthorpe, said: “This obstruction cannot be seen in advance when exiting the roundabout at the bottom of the hill so how can vehicles safely use a dual carriageway when suddenly this path infringes at least a quarter of the left-hand lane.

“I’m actually feeling quite nervous and apprehensive about using this road as I don’t know which lane is going to be safest for me.”

This is just the latest in a series of complaints that neighbours have made about the Aldi – with concerns about the sheer amount of traffic the new store will bring to the surrounding roads making it difficult for locals to get to school and work.

Although work on widening the pavement is due to continue next week, Councillor Gary Blundell has questioned why only part of it was allowed to be done.

He said: “It was all part of the planning conditions, that the path was widened for cyclists and pedestrians to share.

“I honestly don’t know why it was agreed that just a small part of it could be done.”

“Norfolk County Council also deemed it unsafe because of the lack of white lines, cones or warnings.

“Just this morning I have seen people swerve and it really is going to be absolute carnage if people don’t realise it’s there.”

A Norfolk County Council Spokesman said “The works on William Frost Way have been undertaken by Aldi’s contractors to deliver an entrance into the new store.

“Surfacing and lining will be undertaken next week following the Norfolk Show.

“The footway will be widened from the Aldi entrance to a new Toucan crossing scheme on William Frost Way, which has not yet been delivered.”
