A 19th century hotel near the centre of Norwich could be split up into apartments.

Central Hotel, a 15-room bed and breakfast on Riverside Road, could become four flats, under plans submitted to City Hall.

The scheme would also see a garage demolished to make way for an additional house at the rear of the building, on Aspland Road.

The apartments, which would overlook the River Wensum and be close to the railway station, would be one- or two-bedroom properties.

The new building would be a three-bedroom home.

The hotel was originally built as a home in the 1890s and falls within a conservation area designed to protect the nearby St Matthew’s church.

A planning statement said: “In the building's current use much of the historic character has been lost or hidden through successive unsympathetic interventions and subdivisions to create hotel rooms and associated bathrooms.

“The proposed design shows that through careful re-division it is possible to reinstate some of the historic character through revealing the well-proportioned rooms and windows.”

A decision on the plans will be taken by the council in due course.
