A sports club in Hethersett has won a prestigious regional award – just six months after it was set-up.
The Hethersett Social Running Group was launched in April as a partnership between Active Norfolk and Hethersett and the Meltons’ Sports Association, and has now been named Run England Eastern Region Group of the Year, which will see the members honoured at a presentation evening at Chelmsford Football Club early in December.
Throughout the summer the group, which caters for all ages, has been holding Thursday night sessions at Hethersett Junior School, attracting up to 40 people.
The group was initially coached for 10 weeks by Norfolk Olympiad Paul Evans and local athletics coach Ron Marsh, before Maria Alborough took over the coaching duties.
Mr Evans said: “It was great to be involved with the Hethersett beginners’ group and watch the group grow in terms of numbers and ability.
“Anything that brings communities together is a great thing and the running group certainly did that.”
Peter Steward, chairman of Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association, said: “We are hoping that the success of the running club will help us to launch a number of other sporting clubs in Hethersett and the Meltons, supporting a number of sports from tennis to rounders.”
