Roads around Norfolk were flooded after torrential rain yesterday afternoon - and people are being warned of more downpours today.

Yesterday the slip road to the A47 at Trowse was among many roads in and around the city badly flooded, leading to long rush hour tail backs.

It is estimated there were up to 30mm of rainfall in parts of Norwich by yesterday evening.

One driver, who was on the road just after 5pm yesterday when the rain started to pour down as a thunder storm passed over, said it was 'carnage'.

He said: 'It was an absolute nightmare. It was gridlocked both ways.'

Queues reportedly built up for about four miles along the A47 and parts of the city centre were deluged at various time throughout the afternoon and early evening.

Flash floods aloso caused problems for commuters coming in and out of Norwich.

Roads at Antingham near Cromer were also awash with water, while fire crews were called to flooding in Thorpe St Andrew, Saxlingham Nethergate and Sprowston.

Overnight the rain seemed to subside and people are waking up to muggy, but dry, conditions this morning.

However weather forecasters predicted more rain to come.

Steve Western, duty forecaster for Weatherquest at the UEA, said: 'There was some localised flooding yesterday because we had such a lot of rain in a relatively short period of time.

'Today we could be facing a similar pattern to yesterday with rain hitting much of Norwich and Norfolk this afternoon.

'Friday will be slightly better - there will be some rain but we are not expecting any flooding.'

There is good news for the weekend though, when the rain will ease off and we will experience 'calmer' weather.

'There will be high pressure overnight on Friday which means the weather will level off for the weekend,' Mr Western said. 'It will be drier on Saturday and Sunday and next week we also expect dry and warmer weather.'

Temperatures are set to remain at about 18C today and tomorrow.
