A city hospital unit caring for sick and vulnerable children is urging people to help choose them a new child-friendly logo.

The Jenny Lind Children's Hospital has selected nine designs to choose from in a bid to make the infirmary more recognisable and appealing to youngsters.

Each logo is based on the work of artist Hannah Giffard whose pictures adorn the walls of the unit based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital on Colney Lane.

People can choose from images including a hot air balloon, a sailing boat or a row of beach huts, which all match the Jenny Lind's current theme of beaches and the broads.

Dr Mark Dyke, associate medical director and consultant neonatologist, said: 'I strongly believe that our local children's hospital needs a more child-friendly and prominent identity. We deliver health care to thousands of children from across Norfolk and north Suffolk and we really hope people will take this opportunity to help choose an attractive new logo.'

A special web poll is currently live on the Jenny Lind website where people can vote for which design they feel is best suited before it closes on Thursday March 31.

Norfolk artist Mrs Giffard said: 'I am really honoured and pleased for my artwork to be chosen and I hope it gives children lots of pleasure in the future, as well as providing an identity for the Jenny Lind.'

Works by Mrs Giffard are featured throughout the Jenny Lind with wall paintings in the reception area, the waiting area and the examination room.

They depict traditional East Anglian scenes such as the beach huts at Southwold and Wells, the sailing boats on the Norfolk Broads and the seals at Blakeney.

Mrs Giffard continued: 'Before we painted the walls at the hospital it was a little depressing for the children. We wanted to brighten it up so they felt like they were on holiday. I am particularly proud of the port-holes in the waiting area, which make you feel like you are in a boat looking back at the shore.'

The children's hospital is named after a famous 19th century Swedish opera singer whose Norwich concerts raised money for a children's hospital.

The original hospital opened in 1854 and made Norwich only the second city to have a children's infirmary.
