Former Lord Mayor of Norwich Jenny Lay, whose civic charity raised £20,000 for Big C last year, has told how she is now living with cancer – for the second time.

“I have had to step down as a councillor. I am just so sad,” said Mrs Lay, a woman who has devoted the last 16 years of her life to serving Norwich and its people.

“It is heartbreaking really, but I just cannot carry on. I get so tired,” added the 74-year-old mother-of-two, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009 and had been given the all-clear following a double mastectomy.

Now Mrs Lay, who served the city as Sheriff in 1998 and Lord Mayor in 2011/12, has been told she has cancer again – and this time it has forced her step down as a city councillor.

She had previously picked Big C as her charity because of all the magnificent work it does with cancer patients in Norwich and across Norfolk.

And she, along with her husband Ken, and her civic partner Sheriff Chris Higgins, landlord of the Trafford Arms pub, embarked on a year of fundraising which caught the imagination of the public.
