A group of friends is taking on a daunting challenge in memory of one of their mothers.
In total 20 youngsters from across Norwich have set off to complete the 3 peaks challenge.
It involves climbing Ben Nevis in Scotland; Scafell Pike in England and Mount Snowdon in Wales – all in 24 hours.
Members of the group went to Avenue Junior School and City of Norwich School, and although they have now moved to different parts of the country to enrol in university, the determined youngsters have organised the event.
Michael Edwards, one of the people taking part, lost his mother, Aileen Hogan, to Cancer in 2014. So to raise awareness and money for the Big C, Norfolk’s biggest cancer charity, members of the group began dedicating their time to fundraising.
They have hosted pub quizzes, sports days and football tournaments. A pub quiz held on Wednesday raised £405.28.
Aiming to raise £2,000 for the charity, they sprinted past their target and have already raised more than £3,700, with donations coming from across the world.
Amy Fiddament, one of the people taking part, said: “We are doing it in loving memory of Michael’s mum. Attempting this challenge also allows us to express the support and solidarity we all feel for Michael who has confronted the unimaginable at such a young age.
“We are all incredibly proud of him and want to remind him that we will always be there to support him.”
On the group’s Just Giving page, they wrote: “It has been extremely difficult adjusting to life without her (Aileen Hogan).
“For a while now, we have been thinking of ways we can raise money in her name and we finally settled on the National Three Peaks challenge.
“We feel that this is the perfect way to remember Aileen who was born and raised in Canada, the home of the Rockies.
“Unfortunately, in the UK we don’t have mountain ranges as spectacular. However, in order to pay tribute, we have decided to take on the challenge.”
The Big C offers support to people with and families affected by cancer, funds research and equipment and holds information days.
