Children at Brundall Primary School have been getting a feel for different types of gardens from around the world by holding a 'Global Gardens Week'.

The aim of the week was to encourage pupils to learn more about horticulture as well as enhancing their understanding of other cultures, encouraging creativity and knowledge of sustainability.

Seven gardens were designed by the school's nine classes, with years one and two working together to produce a garden based on the 'Mary, Mary Quite Contrary' nursery rhyme and both year six classes making a 'Brundall Boat' garden, based on the school's crest.

There was also a Japanese peace garden, which was dedicated to the school's former maths teacher, Barbara Thomas.

She died of cancer last year after teaching for 17 years at the school.

There was also a Second World War allotment garden, plus seaside, Victorian and Roman themed gardens with suitable scarecrows in each.

Rick Stuart-Sheppard, headteacher at Brundall Primary, said: 'We have special themed weeks at the end of term when we collapse our usual literacy and numeracy curriculum and do some more practical activities.

'Our pupils have been learning about the Romans and Greeks and another class has been learning about the Second World War, so each picked a garden that is linked in with that.'

Organised by curriculum leader Pat Peers, the week proved a great success, culminating in a miniature garden festival in the style of the Chelsea Flower Show, with various awards.

This saw the Brundall Boat garden take the overall prize for the most awards.

Mr Stuart-Sheppard added: 'It was a wonderful week. We had some who stayed after school to keep working on their garden and had to call some parents to say, we've still got your children at school!

'So some of the pupils really enjoyed it, particularly some who are not that great with their writing and numeracy, who have really been able to enjoy this project.'
