A Greek Orthodox church has altered a traditional service in respect to missing student Sophie Smith.

The 21-year-old from Gorleston, studies at the University of East Anglia, and was last seen at just after 3am on Boxing Day.

She suffers from severe anxiety and depression and previously spoke of her intentions to enter the sea.

Before her disappearance she left a note for her family.

The Great Yarmouth Greek Orthodox church, known as St Spryidon's on St Peter's Road, would normally throw a crucifix into the sea today as part of its Feast of Epiphany service.

But as a sign of respect to the missing student it will not carry out that ritual.

The news of her disappearance led to a major search by volunteers and the police.

Norfolk police said the searches for the student would not carry on from tomorrow.

Community volunteers are carrying on with the search.
