A south Norfolk primary school which has 'children's safety at heart of its work' is celebrating after Ofsted inspectors deemed their school to be 'good'.

Spooner Row Primary School in Station Road was praised following the visit in July.

The behaviour and safety of pupils was found to be outstanding.

Lead inspector Geoff Timms said: 'The behaviour of pupils in lessons and around the school is exemplary and they are a delight to spend time with and talk to. They are extremely polite and friendly, and show pride in their achievements and in their school. They live up to the school's strong values and its motto of 'Believe, Achieve, Succeed'.'

It is the school's first full Ofsted report under the watch of headteacher Pauline Powrie, who has been at the school for four years.

Mrs Powrie said: 'We are always aiming for outstanding.

'We are so proud of our children and we are delighted with the report.

'We feel that it reflects our school.'

Mr Timms also noted the school's strong leadership.

He said: 'The leadership of mathematics is outstanding and that in English, and for Early Years and pupils who are disabled or who have special educational needs, is good. Strengths are the training teachers have undergone to improve their leadership and subject knowledge skills but also the sharing of ideas and best practice among staff, including teaching assistants.

'However, the leadership of the other subjects needs to be further developed so that the work in those areas is more closely monitored and pupils' learning more sharply assessed.'

In order to improve, the school was advised to give pupils time to understand and respond to feedback, help pupils improve the precision of their spelling, punctuation and handwriting and ensure the work in subjects other than English and mathematics is targeted more closely at pupils' skills and needs.

Mrs Powrie said the school had already introduced 'self improvement time' where children can look at their teachers' comments and reflect.
