Thousands of Girlguides have marked the end of the movement's centenary year by simultaneously reneing their promises at events across the county.

At 8.10pm last night - or 20:10 on 20/10/2010 - Guides across the UK were joined together by live video link to reaffirm their promises to celebrate the end of Girlguiding's 100th anniversary year.

At one of the area's largest events, an avenue of light welcomed more than 800 girls and adult helpers to the Vision celebrations for the Wensum division, which were held around a camp fire next to the Anglian Windows sport and social club on the edge of Norwich.

Wensum divison commissioner Patricia Threadgold said: 'Lots of the guides have decorated jam jars to create a lit walkway for people to make their way to the camp fire. Each girl who decorated a jar put a message on it, so everyone will leave with a different jar and a message from a new friend.

'As well as renewing promises, we have some new members taking their promise for the first time. This is a really nice way to round off a great year.'

In Norwich city centre, hundreds of Guides gathered on the steps at Millennium Plain outside the Forum for camp fire songs and a look back over 12 months of celebrations before renewing their promises.

About 130 guides from Acle district had a special seaside celebration at Caister lifeboat station, where activities inclued dressing-up relay races where the girls raced to put on the lifeboat crew's emergency gear.

District commissioner Sue Goodchild said: 'This is a chance for the girls to review what we have done together, to renew our promise and look ahead to the next chapter in the guiding story.'

Cromer's Pier Theatre hosted more than 500 guides and helpers from the North Norfolk division, which covers North Walsham, Aylsham, Cromer and Sheringham, for a party with singing and a magician. There was also a display of photographs and video clips from the past year of celebrations.

Division commissioner Charlotte Hornby said: 'This is a great way to bring all these Guides together, the girls have really been looking forward to it.'

Girlguiding is the largest youth organisation in the UK, with 500,000 members across the country and more than 8,200 in Norfolk, aged from five upwards.
