Gino comes to Norwich for family fare

A Norwich restaurant will enjoy national television exposure this afternoon when the latest episode of celebrity chef Gino D’Acampo’s new show airs.
The filming of There’s no Taste Like Home came to The Library Bar and Grill at Guildhall Hill, Norwich, in April, when three amatuer cooks from Norfolk competed to win over the paying customers with their favourite family recipe.
Fifty diners voted for their favourite dish of the three, which will now feature on the restaurant’s menu for a month.
Gino laughed and joked with the contestants and the restaurant’s chefs, giving them tips on bringing their home-cooking creations up to restaurant standard and getting them out for a room full of hungry mouths.

Jayne said: “Having Gino and his team in the restaurant caused a lot of excitement; there was a great atmosphere and quite a lot of fun was had I have to say.
“There were quite a lot of ladies in the restaurant for Gino! There was a lot of laughter in the kitchen; one of the contestants kept going to the bar for beer as he was hot and Gino kept shouting him back!
“It’s a real boost to have it happen and a real opportunity for the restaurant. It’s nice to put Norfolk on the map again. People always poke fun at Norfolk and usually just think of Alan Partridge, so they don’t realise how good it is for food.”
The restaurant was chosen for the show because of its suitability for filming. It has lots of open space, a mixture of contemporary and modern features and is housed in a grade two listed building, the site of Britain’s first public library. It was also recommended by a customer who works for ITV. The contestants were filmed at home before cooking their cherished family dishes with Gino. They were Dawn Pollock, of Green Hill Close, Costessey, who served her Grandma Maude’s Norfolk Rabbit Pie; Luke Coathup, who lives off Earlham Road, Norwich, who cooked his Grandma Eva’s Great Norfolk Roast Lamb, and Cromer fisherman John Chambers, who rustled up his Grandad Harry’s Cromer Crab Bake.
Rabbit pie cook Dawn said: “It was the most fabulous day ever; the best day of my life. Gino is just as you see him on TV and it was such an experience to work in a pro kitchen; it’s so hard.
“The dish goes right the way back in our family, even my gran’s mother used to cook it. It was my great granddad’s favourite.
“I love cooking at home, and I’m really chuffed to have my cooking recognised.
“It’s a great tribute to my gran and to the old ways of Norfolk. Some of the older diners came up to me and said they hadn’t tasted a rabbit pie like that since they were little.”
