All sorts of weird and wonderful things took to the stage for the end-of-year drama production at City of Norwich School this year.

Little Shop of Horrors – a rock musical originally penned by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman – was directed by CNS drama teacher Rosy Coppard and had music teacher James Sunderland as musical director.

The production was completely run by the students, including the cast, props, lighting and sound. The cast was made up of pupils from year seven to year 10, with sixth-formers Natalie Moles-Smith and Nick Boulton running the lighting and sound desks.

Sam Woods carried the show as Seymour, the down-trodden florist who gets landed with a man-eating plant, played by Tilly Ansell.

He is trying to win the heart of Audrey, played by year nine student Sophie Grisewood, from her psychopathic dentist boyfriend and at the same time not work himself to death for his grasping boss, Mrs Mushnik, played by Sorrel Grundy.

The part of the dentist was played by Hollywood comic star Steve Martin in the 1986 film version directed by Frank Oz and CNS year 10 student Joe Murray took on the part of the villain with similar relish.

Susie Childerhouse, from the CNS drama department, said: 'The students had been rehearsing since Christmas time and had to fit it into their busy schedules, especially the year 10 students who had to juggle the school show with their academic commitments for their GCSEs.

'All in all, the show was a massive success and we had loads of fun. It was great to have this performance to mark the end of our centenary year.'
