Ghastly ghosts, vicious vampires, and frightening fiends flooded Norwich's streets to take part in a petrifying Halloween parade.

Performers based at The Garage and the University of East Anglia put on eerie entertainment outside the Forum to kick off the Spooky City event, as characters moved throughout the crowd giving a scare to those watching the main show.

Dave and Shell Abrahams, from Norwich, took part in the parade with two-year-old Bobby. While Dave went along as Frankenstein’s monster, Shell was a fallen angel, with little Bobby was a ghost pirate.

Mr Abrahams said: “We came because we live locally and it’s good for everyone to get out together. It’s also safer I think than going and knocking on people’s doors.”

Steven Mickleburgh, Bryony Snelling, and their seven-year-old son Joshua put plenty of work into their trio of Ghostbuster costumes. Miss Snelling said going to the parade had “become a bit of a tradition”.

She added: “We’ve been working on our costumes for a couple of weeks now, it’s great to have events like this in the city.”

In Chapelfield Gardens, an array of weird and wonderful characters greeted the parade, before an exciting circus and music show rounded off the evening.

Norwich City Council culture and events manager Helen Selleck said: “Everybody has made a real effort, and this is all about Norwich and the culture of the city, I don’t think you’d see something quite like this in other places.

“We start thinking about the next year’s event straight after this one.

“We’ve had a huge crowd turn out tonight.”

Those driving in the city appeared to have taken heed of warnings about road closures caused by Spooky City and also the Norwich City match against Wolves, as disruption appeared to be kept to a minimum.

Councillor Alan Waters, leader of Norwich City Council added: “Spooky City is yet another highlight in the city’s jam-packed events calendar.

“This event, now in its fifth year, gets more popular each time, with more and more people getting into the spirit.

“Our thanks go to all the partners and performers who are working with us to put on this excellent entertainment.”
