Frost blankets large parts of Norfolk, motorists urged to be careful

Norwich-based forecaster Weatherquest said temperatures could still drop further before rising in the mid morning to late afternoon.

Forecaster Dan Holley said one of the coldest areas in the country this morning was Santon Downham near the Norfolk and Suffolk border where the temperature dropped to -3.9 degrees overnight.

He said: 'It could still get colder as the lowest temperature will always be around 7am to 8am as there is a lag as the sun comes up. 'Most places went sub zero this morning, although it was a bit warmer in areas along the coast. Cromer was recorded at 4 degrees.'

Mr Holley said today's high would be around 8 to 9 degrees.

'It's a bit below average for this time of the year, but not massively so.

'There will be quite a bit of sunshine today which will compensate for the colder temperatures.'

He said some cloud cover was expected later this afternoon, but this would clear tonight with temperatures dropping to between -1 and 1 degree in places overnight.

'Most places will be dry and Norwich will get down to around 1 to 2 degrees.'

He said Saturday would include 'some sunny spells' with scattered showers in some areas of the county.

'There will be cloud cover and temperatures should be similar to what we have experienced with frost again possible on Saturday night.' Norfolk police said motorists should take extra care on the roads this morning and leave a bit earlier to give themselves more time.

The warning was echoed by the East of England Ambulance Service, which added that motorists should ensure they had de-iced their vehicles before setting off.
