A Norwich City legend has donated money to a charity helping children with Asperger syndrome in Norfolk.

Darren Huckerby and his wife Lyndsey have donated a cheque for 500 to Asperger East Anglia (AEA). Thecla Fellas, children and youth service manager for AEA, said: 'AEA is extremely grateful to Darren Huckerby and his wife Lyndsey. Darren and his wife came to our main office based at the Charing Cross Centre [in Norwich] to present the cheque and spent some time speaking to the trustees, staff and young people hearing about the work AEA carries out helping those with Asperger syndrome.'

AEA works in groups to encourage those with Asperger syndrome to improve social skills.

Ms Fellas said: 'Most of us take these for granted. It is not a skill they naturally acquire as they develop and mature.

'This can lead to confrontational and challenging situations arising in their everyday life. For many of the young people we help, the groups we run are the only social situations that they are able to take part in as many experience extreme anxieties and are afraid to go out to unfamiliar places.

'In the past year we have provided a service to 275 young people in Norwich, Great Yarmouth and Thetford. Therefore the money received from the Darren Huckerby Trust will be put to good use and we will continue to strive to find more funding from other sources.'

The money received will go towards the youth service, which will cease to benefit from Norfolk County Council Children's Disability Services funding – worth 60,000 – from the end of March this year. To continue to help fund the work, the charity is in the process of setting up a charity shop in Lowestoft, due to open in March.
