Former Norwich City football club chairman Robert Chase has put his Norfolk mansion up for sale.

Mr Chase's Grade II listed Georgian country house, Halvergate Hall, is for sale for 1.35m with Savills.

Mr Chase was chair of the club during its most successful period to date, when in the 1990's it reached the UEFA Cup and secured a memorable win against Bayern Munich.

However, he was also one of the most controversial figures in the club's history after a string of high-profile sales following the run, which led to mass protests amongst fans and his eventual departure.

Inside the house, there is little evidence of his time at the club, except for a framed portrait photograph of Mr Chase at the ground and in his office a framed picture of what he described as the club's 'best team ever'.

The picture, taken in the early nineties, shows a young Bryan Gunn, Dale Gordon, Ruel Fox, Tim Sherwood and the then manager Dave Stringer.

Mr Chase, now 71, pictured above at the football ground in 2003, has lived at Halvergate Hall, near Acle, for 32 years and now his family has grown up, he and his wife would like to enjoy the house they have abroad a little more. However, he said he is not moving from Norfolk, just giving himself more time to spend abroad, which may include time in Australia where one of his sons lives.

'I am not happy or sad to leave Halvergate Hall,' he said. 'I have brought up our four sons and had two memorable parties; one for the millennium and the other for my father's 100th birthday when we had fireworks; 100 rockets.'

Another memory was in the eighties when Mr Chase said Michael Heseltine came to stay at the hall in preparation for what became known as the 'Halvergate Bill' which granted subsidies for using traditional methods of farming in designated environmentally sensitive areas.

Indeed, the house commands a wonderful position looking across to Breydon Water. It is believed to have been built in 1840 and boasts two reception rooms at the front; a drawing room and dining room.

Outside, are beautiful gardens and grounds totalling just over eight acres including garaging and a tennis court.

Halvergate Hall is for sale with Savills on 01603 229229.
