Former Blur drummer Dave Rowntree has added his voice to the campaign to save Norwich's Future Projects school.
Now an active Labour Party campaigner, Mr Rowntree called on Norfolk County Council’s cabinet to rethink a decision to shelve funding for the school when it meets today.
Supporters of the school including parents whose children go there are planning to hold a protest outside County Hall today as part of a campaign to get the authority to changes its mind.
County Hall has decided to withdraw a contract for academic education which Future Projects provides for more than 20 youngsters at its Motum Road based.
Mr Rowntree said the decision would be counter-productive in the longer term, because the school does great work helping those children who have struggled with mainstream education.
“It’s in everybody’s interests to support Future Projects,” he said. “They are such an amazing group doing really good work in the local community. It just seems unacceptable that the county council would chose to cut the funding.
“These are kids that by and large have been failed by the system and that was why this was set up in the first place to give them somewhere to go and give them some hope in life.
“It’s the worst kind of short-termism to cut a project like this at the knees.”
