A long-established football club which has produced some well known names over the years is hoping for a cash injection.

The Evening News has teamed up with Sport Relief and the Norfolk Community Foundation to give community groups in the city the chance to grab a slice of 62,500.

A wide range of organisations, from parent and toddler groups to small Norwich-based charities, can apply for grants of between 500 and 1,000.

One of the groups which have applied includes the Harford Tornadoes. The city-based club has seen the likes of Darren Cann, one of the two English officials going to the World Cup this year, and Robert Taylor, who played for Manchester City, go through its ranks.

The club has to pay out more than 2,000 to hire out the pitch at Norwich CEYMS Sports Ground in Blofield for 12 games.

If the team is lucky enough to win the cash, it will help keep them going.

Ralph Stone, 82, honorary life president of the club which was founded in 1974, said: 'We have to raise quite a sum of money each season to take part in providing quality coaching and competition for young lads.

'As a founder member I'm justifiably proud of the club but it's a struggle to keep going.'

There are less than two weeks for community and voluntary groups to get their application forms in with the deadline fast approaching.

To apply for the Sport Relief Community Cash grant, eligible groups must be in the Norwich City Council area, run by local people, have an income of less than 50,000 and work in a deprived or disadvantaged area.

Groups which can apply include charities in the city, parent and toddler groups, lunch clubs, youth and older people's groups and sports clubs which have a constitution.

Grants will not be awarded to individuals, statutory organisations or groups which are not constituted. The funding will not be given to help fund trips abroad, mini-buses or to fund building costs. Grants are restricted to one per group.
