English Folk/Americana singer and songwriter John Smith is coming to Norwich on his headline European tour.

With support from Will Stratton, John Smith will be headlining The Waterfront Studio in Norwich on November 22.

Other than the name, there is nothing commonplace about John Smith. He's played to audiences all over the world, in living rooms, festival tents and sold-out concert halls, with a powerful singing voice that critics have compared to the likes of John Martyn and Ray Lamontagne.

John has been touring relentlessly as both a headline and supporting act, opening shows for Iron & Wire, Tinairwen, Gil Scott-Heron, John Martyn and John Rembourn, also playing alongside artists such as Jackson Browne, Jerry Douglas, Chris Thile, Martin Carthy, Richard Hawley, Jarvis Cocker and Rodney Crowell.

He plays a rumbling fingerstyle, sometimes using a slide, sometimes playing the guitar on his lap and sometimes detuning his guitar mid-song. His guitar work and honey-on-gravel vocals have brought crowds to pin-drop silence and rapturous applause.

Ben Howard describes him as a 'magician' whilst other critics say he has 'captured something special' and 'there's a refreshing openness and honesty' to his latest record.

He was named Young Acoustic Guitarist of the year in 2003 and hasn't stopped to look back, unless it's to pick up his banjo.

Headlong, his newest album released on May 19, comes bearing a title implying impulsive, breakneck motion - written as it was, during various touring stints in North America - with a view ahead, to new horizons and new songs, to new opportunities and new audiences.

The album also bears the indelible loss of John's friend and guitar hero John Renbourn, who called John 'the future of folk music' and to whose memory 'Headlong' is dedicated.

Tickets for the Norwich show can be bought from the UEA Box Office and via his website for the rest of his European tour.
