Aussie pie shop in Norwich creates World Cup-inspired pastries

As the rest of the world prepares for the biggest football tournament of the year, one Norwich pie shop is ready to take on your taste buds

It’s the biggest football competition in the world and brings together a host of different nations.

And now one Norwich pie shop is hoping to bring together the best flavours from the countries taking part to take the city’s taste buds on a World Cup tour.

Australian-themed pie shop, Flaming Galah’s is creating a pie to match each of Australia or England’s opposing sides in the World Cup.

Owner Callum Haggarty, will draw inspiration for the speciality pie around the traditional delicacy or native vegetation of the region.

The 35-year-old said he plans to meld the two cultures of Australia or England in to their competing side, and put it all in to one pie.

The first pie to go in to the oven is an eclectic mix of France and Australia.

“Starting this week we will do a French pie which will have duck, pork and Kangaroo in it,” Mr Haggarty said.

For England’s first match against Tunisia, the Norwich businessman will take taste buds across the sea and over to Tunisia.

He said: “We will be doing Tunisian-style chicken meatballs with a preserved lemon and harissa relish pie. That one should be really good.”

Mr Haggarty opened the pie shop in Ber Street in 2013 and said he regularly caters the special flavours of his pies to monumental events, such as the World Cup.

He has experimented with many types of meat and vegetables from other cultures and countries. He said: “I have made pies using llama and zebra, which is more South African, horse, alpaca as well as kangaroo.”

During the last World Cup Mr Haggarty created Brazilian-inspired flavours for his pastries and this time around has been inspired by Russia.

Mr Haggarty lived in the South Australian city or Adelaide for four years. In that time, he worked at a fine dining restaurant and experienced his fair-share of Australia’s iconic pie scene.

Despite his time in Australia, Mr Haggarty said he will back England in the World Cup and added: “England will be my first choice, although I will be following Australia as my second team.”

The Australian/French pie hybrid will be served at the Flaming Galah’s pie shop from today and will be open from midday to 8pm, Tuesday to Sunday.
