Members of a Norwich fitness group have completed an obstacle course with a difference to raise money for a Norwich charity.

Fifteen members of the exercise classes Bootcamp Fitness, which are run by qualified personal trainer Lee Ashford and held at various locations around Norwich, decided they wanted to do something to raise money for charity.

The group chose Norwich-based charity Nelson’s Journey – which helps and supports bereaved children and young people throughout Norfolk – because the service helped Mr Ashford’s son when he lost his grandmother.

Mr Ashford, from Taverham, is hoping that when all the money is counted together they will have raised £2,000.

He said: “We’re really pleased with the amount we have raised.

“At one stage we were thinking £1,000 and then it was £1,500 would be nice but now it looks to be nearer £2,000.

“Some of the individual runners have got £300 each.

“A lot of people running had known people who needed support at times of bereavement. And it’s nice to think we can put a smile on children’s faces.”

The mucky race is a 10km steeplechase which involved the group of mixed fitness abilities to jump, scramble and hurdle over and under difference obstacles including water.

The personal instructor added: “Thirteen of us did it as a team and made sure everyone was over the obstacle before we moved on. The other two members did a personal race against each other.

“It was a great achievement because two or three were really out of their comfort zones.

“We enjoyed it and the horse jumps and obstacles were quite demanding and we liked the mud. We were by far the largest and loudest group and had the most fun with our great team spirit.”

And Mr Ashford and his fitness group members are looking forward to their next challenge.

“It has given us a taste and we are going to try something even more challenging next year. It’s nice to know you’re raising money for a good cause.”
