First part of former Mercy nightclub in Prince of Wales Road, Norwich reopens today

The first part of the revamped Mercy nightclub in Prince of Wales Road, Norwich reopens today .

Uber cocktail bar and lounge and Unique VIP area will open their doors to the public at 9pm.

In the future there will be four venues in the one building, but clubbers will have to wait until next Easter for the over-18s and over-25s nightclubs, which will be called Mirage and Taboo, to open at the venue.

One of Norwich's most iconic nightclubs closed its doors to punters in June before undergoing the multi-million pound makeover.

Operations manager Toby Middleton said: 'Uber alone has cost more than 0.75m while the whole project will cost nearly 2m.

'It's an exciting time for Prince of Wales Road, and we can promise people a fun time whenever they come, and they can expect that quirky Peri's Leisure venue experience.

'There will be so many dramatic changes that there are too many to mention. For anyone who remembers what Mercy was like, it will be a transformative experience.'

The news has been welcomed by Stefan Gurney, the city centre partnership manager, who said it would give punters more choice of venue.

He said: 'Norwich has a vibrant night-time economy and it's important that these kind of venues revamp and refurbish themselves to reflect modern styles and trends. Mercy catered for a certain demographic and clientele and it's good that part of it is reopening. We want as many businesses as possible to give people a variety of offers in the city.'

Mercy could hold 2,300 people and managers hope the new venue will be able to accommodate 3,000.

Before its closure attendance figures at the venue had been falling, but managers hope that having four venues in one building will allow customers to hop between each one and stay longer.

The club is owned by Steve Peri, who also owns Rocco's, Pulse and Lace, also on Prince of Wales Road.
