Plans for the final part of the Riverside Walk in Norwich have been submitted by Norwich Heart (Heritage, Economic and Regeneration Trust) on behalf of the Wensum River Parkway Partnership.

The planned Wensum Walkway, on the north bank of the river, would provide a link and support for the rest of the walkway over the river between Norwich Playhouse and the west of Mary Chapman Court.

An application to build the path has been submitted to Norwich City Council and Mike Loveday, chief executive of Heart, said: 'We think it's very important as it's the missing link in the Riverside Walk in Norwich. In fact, it's the final link in the chain for walks from Fakenham to Great Yarmouth.

'Hopefully, if it's approved, it will help re-animate the river and by linking to the Playhouse, a lot of people should be able to take advantage of it. We are looking to have it open in 2013.'

He said the estimated cost of the project would be between 200,000 and 300,000 and could potentially be met by funding from the European Union.

Money for the feasibility and design work for the project was provided by the Greater Norwich Development Partnership, Mr Loveday said.

Adrian Clarke, senior waterways and recreation officer for the Broads Authority, said: 'The Broads Authority is supportive of the principle to fill in the missing link on the Wensum River Parkway between St George's Bridge and Duke Street. It will provide a continuous riverside walk through the historic river corridor, which is an under-used asset of the city.'
