A prisoner who escaped from King's Lynn Magistrates' Court is back behind bars after a week on the run.

Riki McGrath, of Wistaria Road, Wisbech, jumped out of the dock and ran from the building when he was refused bail at a hearing last Monday.

The 22-year-old, who was facing a dangerous driving charge, was found in the Lincolnshire area and re-arrested on Monday.

Security was tightened when he appeared before Lynn magistrates again yesterday (Tuesday) charged with escaping lawful custody.

Extra staff were drafted in and the bench approved an application from court security firm Senco to keep McGrath in handcuffs for the duration of his hearing for the safety of its staff.

The case was adjourned until October 23 when it will be sent to Norwich Crown Court.

McGrath was originally charged with driving an Audi A4 dangerously in Tilney St Lawrence, Magdalen and Watlington on September 30.

He is accused of abandoning the Audi while it was still moving and allowing it to roll on to the railway crossing at Watlington while the warning lights were flashing, endangering the safety of passengers on an oncoming train.

McGrath also faces a third set of charges relating to alleged aggravated vehicle taking on July 27.

He is accused of taking a Volkswagen Golf without the owner's consent and driving it dangerously, at speeds of up to 120mph, along the A47 between Thorney and Wisbech.

He is also charged with failing to stop for police and driving without insurance.

Magistrates adjourned the dangerous driving matter until November 6, when the case will return to the Lynn court.

The aggravated vehicle taking offences will be heard at Cambridge Magistrates' Court on November 7.

McGrath was remanded in custody until October 23.
