Children who have suffered the loss of a loved one stand to benefit from an emotional fundraising event being held in memory of a popular Sprowston footballer just over a year after he died following a car crash.

Liam Still, a goalkeeper with Wroxham FC and Riverside Rovers, suffered fatal injuries after his Vauxhall Corsa crashed on the B1108 Watton Road, near Bawburgh, as he drove back to his St Margaret's Drive home at around 5.15am on May 19 last year.

After initial treatment at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, the 21-year-old, who lived with his mother, Amanda, and younger sister, Katie, was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital, in Cambridge, where he died on May 24.

The date is a painful one for his devastated family – but two days after the anniversary of Liam's death they hope to remember him together and do something positive help raise as much money as possible for Norwich-based charity Nelson's Journey by holding a mini-music festival and fete at Sprowston Social Club.

The family-friendly event, which takes place at the Blue Boar Lane venue between 2pm and 11pm on May 26, will feature music, a barbecue, bouncy castle, face painting, tombola, raffle and penalty shoot out.

Mrs Still said they chose to support Nelson's Journey as Liam revealed he was going to do a skydive for them. Mrs Still said: 'My mum and I went up there because they had an activity weekend at Sheringham, giving the kids activities to do. It was nice because they were in the company of other kids who were going through exactly the same thing – it was a fantastic day.'

It is hoped the event will give the whole family something positive to focus on at a very difficult time.

Mrs Still said: 'On the day of his anniversary we're getting his ashes interred and thought on May 26 we wanted to have a fun day. It's going to be a fun, family day. We hope to raise as much for Nelson's Journey as possible.'
