Some people dream of seeing the Northern Lights or swimming with dolphins.
But Emma Godbold from Becket’s Grove in Wymondham is set to fulfil her childhood dream by running the London Marathon.
“For me, running started about two years ago,” said the 39-year-old. “I was a really unfit person, but I’m part of a Disney fan community and there’s a running team involved in that. I got the running bug from them.”
Miss Godbold, who works as a PA at the University of East Anglia travelled to Disney World in Florida to tackle her first challenge, a Disney half marathon.
“I always said I would do it, knowing there was no chance I would be a runner,” she said. “So I started small with the couch to 5k.”
Three months off work with depression left her with plenty of time on her hands, and running quickly took over.
She said: “In November 2012 I was still recovering from that and running was helping my health.
“It was something I did on my own, I did a 5k run, then a 10k and then I decided I was going to be really daring and sign up for the half marathon in June.
“I went to Florida for two weeks, and to go from someone who was suffering from depression to going to Florida alone was amazing. I couldn’t believe I had completed it.”
More races and more fundraising followed, but she still had her sights set higher.
“I wanted to do a marathon before I was 40,” she said. “I told my dad I’d do a marathon and I wanted to keep my promise.”
And now Miss Godbold is making good on that promise, with a place to run the London Marathon next year for the Make A Wish Foundation.
She said: “I love what they dof or children and the wishes they grant are amazing.
“I’ve got a huge sponsorship target so not only have I got to run 26 miles, but I’ve also got to raise £2,000.”
To help her reach the target, Miss Godbold has organised a collection in Norwich City Centre on October 18 with the Norwich Sci Fi Club, who will be raising money for Scotty’s Little Soldiers.
“I’ll be in the city collecting and there may even be a Dalek or two.
“I’ll be doing lots of events to help reach my target, I’m just thinking of lots of enjoyable things to do in the run up to Christmas.”
