'We are spending £1.9 billion on improving infrastructure in East Anglia.'

He toured the site with South West Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss who said it was fantastic to have support from the highest level.

She said: 'This part of the country has missed out for years. East Anglia is getting more funding than any other area in the UK, except for London and the south west. It should be a priority.'

Ms Truss added that investment showed the work by the Norfolk and Suffolk MPs.

'Infrastructure is our number one priority. It's about working together.'

Mr Cameron walked over the new bridge, which was installed in October, and met the site managers and workers.

Terry Carrick, steel fixer foreman who works for Swords, Balfour Beatty's subcontractor, said: 'It's nice for someone to turn up. It's a big project and it's great for us. It has been talked about for a long time. Brandon is known for being a town where you get stuck in traffic

'This project is all on time and on budget.'

Mr Carrick, who lives in Brandon, said that work locally had enabled him to spend more time with his one-year-old daughter.

'We are used to travelling an hour and a half to work so for us to work here has been fantastic. It gives us a good work/life balance. I got to see her open her birthday presents.'

Around 60pc of construction workers are from the local area.

The Highways Agency have targeted a late autumn completion for the £102 million scheme.
