A Norwich school is celebrating after Ofsted inspectors gave it a good rating with outstanding elements, with pupil behaviour coming in for particular praise.
It is the latest landmark in several years of continuing improvement at West Earlham Junior School, which just four years ago was placed on special measures.
Headteacher Tony Hull said he was delighted with the school’s transformation and said the latest report was a tribute to the hard work of the whole school community.
He said: “We are delighted by the fact that pupil behaviour has been graded as outstanding and that inspectors have recognised the vast amount of good and outstanding teaching in school which has enabled the accelerated progress to happen. It is these two things that have enabled the progress to take place.
“When you think of the journey that has been travelled here, I am more than proud, I am absolutely delighted because it is thoroughly deserved by everybody.
“The school went into special measures in 2007 and we brought it out in 2009, and in the two intervening years everyone has worked hard to continue the progress.
“Absolutely everybody involved deserves a pat on the back.”
The latest inspection took place last month and the report by inspectors gave the school an overall good rating and an outstanding rating for the school’s capacity for sustained improvement.
The report praised Mr Hull’s “outstanding and determined leadership”. “He has recruited and inspired a strong team who work together exceptionally well to implement the school’s clear, ambitious aims.”
It said teaching is good with almost half of the lessons observed demonstrating outstanding practice, and that pupils make good progress with more able pupils making excellent progress in English and maths.
It said: “Pupils say they enjoy school and demonstrate this with their above average attendance. They have well-developed social skills and good manners. They enjoy taking on responsibilities around the school.
“Behaviour is outstanding in lessons and around the school.”
