Future Education and Norfolk County Council are to hold more talks today as an Evening News campaign to save the school and youth project in the city gathers momentum.

More than 1,000 people have shown their support with comments on social networking sites and an online petition. Key community figures have also given their backing to the Save our Future campaign.

Last month, it emerged that Future Education and other Future Projects face a funding crisis after Norfolk County Council did not award them a contract.

It awarded an alternative education contract to a national provider for vocational provision and withdrew an academic contract.

Former Norwich North MP Ian Gibson pledged his support for the project and was full of praise for Future Radio and the project as a whole. 'It is such a good thing to have and young people can get involved and go in and talk,' he said.

'I have been there and I think it's superb. I think it is established and necessary for that part of Norwich and I would like to replicate it in the north part of the city.'

He said there were questions which needed to be asked about how the decisions had been made.

One petition, set up in California by a former Norwich resident has attracted more than 100 signatures.

One comment by signatory Tim Bastable said: 'Projects like Future Education are giving a chance to the kids the mainstream system fails. Failure to fund such schemes is a disaster for the children involved. It is also a false economy for future public spending. Kids with difficult lives are the most likely to end up in trouble and create far bigger costs for the public purse in the long term. Future education is giving these kids a chance to feel better about themselves and hopefully feel better about the world and be more able to lead a productive life.'
