Raw, promising, but as yet undiscovered, music and dance acts are being given the chance to make a name for themselves by a Norwich youth venue, which is committed to showcasing the city's wealth of young talent.

Around 30 performers - from beatboxers to breakdancers and hip hop acts - aged between 13 and 21, descended on The Garage, a performing arts centre based in Chapel Field Road North, on Friday for its latest Slam Night.

The event, which has been running for about the past two years, sees a range of acts take to the stage with the best performer on the night being chosen by the audience of young people.

Slam Night’s also offer a chance for members of the audience to take to the stage if they want and have a go with the best audience act going on to get a slot at the next Slam Night.

Darren Grice, director of The Garage, said: “It’s brilliant. It’s a Friday night, it’s a safe place for them to come; they’re really supportive of each other and there’s a really nice vibe.”

Slam Nights, which are currently held every five to six months, are aimed at helping to discover talented youngsters from the area and giving them a chance to perform.

Mr Grice added: “For us its a really good way of working with new young people and its great to see them get their performance wings. It’s a really great place for them to get that first experience.”

India Agarwala, who sang a cappella, won Friday’s Slam Event. The next one will be held on July 21.

Youngsters are being given the chance to be part of The Pulse, a unique performance to welcome the Olympic Torch when it comes to Norwich in July. To find out more log onto www.thegarage.org.uk.
