Student chief to join fees debate in Norwich

PUBLISHED: 16:10 26 November 2010

The president of the National Union of Students (NUS) will be among the speakers at a potentially lively debate about university tuition fees next week.

Aaron Porter will be joined by Norwich South Liberal Democrat MP Simon Wright and former Norwich North MP Dr Ian Gibson for the “big fees debate” at the University of East Anglia (UEA) at 7pm on December 2.

Mr Wright is at the centre of a storm about the issue of tuition fees, having been elected with a majority of 310 in May after signing a pre-election pledge to oppose any increase.

The coalition government has since introduced a package of proposals that includes increasing fees to up to £9,000 a year, and Mr Wright has not yet said how he will vote on the issue.

Tom Dolton, communications officer for the Union of UEA Students, said: “The issue is a key concern for the constituents of Norfolk. After the success of the union’s general election debate in April, it is apparent that voters feel they need their voices to be heard.

“The union believes that many of Simon Wright’s constituents are passionate about the issue and are pleased to welcome any members of the local community to this debate.”
