Sparhawk Infant and Nursery School in Sprowston decided to take a collaborative approach when pupils were asked to decorate a model elephant due to take part in a charity parade in the intu Chapelfield shopping centre in Norwich.

The elephant - named Sathi Ganest, or Friend to the Elephant in Hindi - was one of seven miniature beasts to bear designs by young people at Norwich schools and colleges.

Now it has been chosen as the first school design to be commissioned as a replica, which will be sold throughout the world as the elephant parade continues its international journey.

Places the parade has already visited include Rotterdam, Southern California, Singapore, Copenhagen and Milan.

Priscilla Crane, head teacher of Sparhawk Infant and Nursery School, said: “What fantastic news. I am so incredibly proud of all the children for producing such bright and animated designs. The children will be full of cheer when I share this good news with them.”

The replica Sathi Ganesh elephants will be available to buy from the Elephant Parade web shop in a few months’ time.

People are also able to place an online bid for the large elephant which took part in the Norwich parade, or just make a donation to the Asian Elephant Foundation, via the tour website http://intuelephantparade.co.uk/elephants
