City youngsters have had the chance to take part in their own Olympic torch relay.

In the run-up to a series of Paralympic taster events at Sewell Park College today and tomorrow (Friday), youngsters at junior schools in the area took part in their own torch relay.

The torch from the 1948 London Games was run from George White Junior to Lionwood Junior on Tuesday. The youngsters from the two schools met up at Britannia Barracks in Britannia Road to hand over the torch.

Sarah Shirras, headteacher at Lionwood, said: 'They each ran around the school playground with the torch so they all got to hold it and I told them about how my dad got to see it back in 1948 when he was 11. It helped bring home how long ago it was that the Olympics last came to this country.'

About 24 children from George White Junior ran the torch from the school and around Mousehold Heath before handing it over to Lionwood. The torch was at Sprowston Junior and Catton Grove yesterday (Wednesday).

James Cordeaux, a teacher at George White, said: 'The children absolutely loved it. We are stressing to them that they will remember this when they are older.'

As previously reported in the Evening News, Sewell Park College is hosting two Paralympic days after winning a cash injection of more than 7,300.

Pupils from the St Clements Hill school and youngsters from primary schools in the surrounding area will take part in a wide range of Paralympic sports including sitting volleyball, goalball, wheelchair basketball and boccia.
