Young people from Norwich had the chance to show off their culinary skills yesterday as they got a taste of high class hospitality.

More than 50 professional cookery students from City College Norwich spent the day at Dunston Hall working in the kitchen and in front of house to help accommodate 500 people in the hotel’s restaurant and function rooms.

Paul Murfitt, director of food and beverage at the hotel, said he had been impressed with the levels of skills and aptitude of the students.

He said: “I have really been very impressed with the level of professionalism. They have a real passion for the industry.”

He added that the hotel hoped to get the students back to completely run the kitchen and front of house for a special event early next year.

Victoria Dillon, 16, said: “The day has been really good. I didn’t think I would like it at first, but I really enjoyed it.

“I want to be a pastry chef and I think this experience
will definitely help me to do that.”

Steve Thorpe, head of the School of Hotel, Hair and Beauty at City College Norwich said: “Our students have worked immensely hard to get to the point where they are ready to cater for large numbers in such a prestigious venue.

“Getting work experience opportunities such as this one is invaluable for the development of our students and we are very grateful to Dunston Hall for inviting us.”
