They have the recipe for success on the pitch and now two members of the Canaries' squad have dropped into a Norwich school to help young chefs kick on in the kitchen.

Norwich City defenders Zak Whitbread and Adam Drury took a break from preparations for Saturday's Championship clash with Scunthorpe at Carrow Road to drop into Bluebell Primary School in Norwich.

The players were at the school in Lovelace Road, off The Avenues, to help with the pupils' preparations for the Let's Get Cooking BIG Cookathon – a national event which encourages people to cook.

The BIG Cookathon takes place on April 5 and 220 pupils from Bluebell Primary, aged between four and 11, will be taking part in to try to win a share of the 3,000 prize money.

Whitbread and Drury visited the school to show their support and help the youngsters make their chosen healthy dish of pizza, which they will be cooking on the day of the event.

Joe Ferrari, head of media at Norwich City Football Club, said: 'The players really enjoyed themselves and hopefully the children had fun too.' It is the first year Bluebell Primary has signed up to the event which will see 22 schools and almost 3,500 people across the region – from Sudbury to Braintree – taking part in the BIG Cookathon.

Headteacher Trudi Sharred said: 'We work hard to provide our pupils with the skills to help them enjoy happy and healthy lives. Being able to cook nutritious meals is a huge part of getting the most out of life, so it made perfect sense to set up a Let's Get Cooking club in school. The club has been running for three years and the children and their parents really enjoy it.

'We thoroughly enjoyed the players' visit and the children were excited about cooking for their heroes.'

Across England, more than 230 community cooking events, involving an expected 51,000 children and adults, will be held as part of the day. The competition is organised by Let's Get Cooking, the largest network of school-based healthy food clubs for children and parents, which is led by the School Food Trust and supported by the Big Lottery Fund.

Anyone who would like to get involved should email info@letsgetcooking.org.uk providing contact details, an address and what you are willing to do and you will be put in touch with your local club.
