Most people are used to hearing dull and lifeless music whenever they phone someone and are put on hold.

However, a group of former students have teamed-up to ensure that anyone phoning City College Norwich is able to enjoy a blast of rap music while they wait.

The college's new 'hold' music is performed by former A-level student Coll (Collins Matsika), who is the main artist on Interim Records, an independent record label which has an office and studio space at the college.

The catchy rap tune with lyrics about 'getting knowledge from the college' was co-written by former student Joel Siwale (Cee Jay), who founded Interim Records and is now the entrepreneur in residence.

The video of the song has also been launched on YouTube and Mr Matsika, 19, who lives in New Costessey, said: 'I was at college last year doing my A-levels and the principal noticed my talent and he put us up as ambassadors for the college.

'We came up with the idea to write this song to inspire other students, as the college helped me a lot in my study time and with video production.

'Cee Jay and I came up with something catchy, not too cheesy. It took about 20 minutes to write it and about one hour to record it.'

Cee Jay, 22, who lives off Dereham Road in Norwich, added: 'We wanted to do something that showed our appreciation for what the college does and to inspire other people to come here. It's about getting knowledge from the college and waking up in the morning and looking forward to coming here.

'The song will be given away free to new students as a promo, and will be able to download from the college's website.'

Teele Killing, 26 and from Long Stratton, a former foundation degree media and moving image student at the college, filmed and produced the video.

College principal Dick Palmer said the work fitted in with its aim of developing enterprise and entrepreneurial skills, which has seen it become a Peter Jones Enterprise Academy.

'The college song is a great way of promoting the college through using the fantastic talents of our students,' he said.

Next year a purpose-built enterprise zone will open at the college where students can learn and develop these skills

The second Interim Records release by Coll will be released later this year called Lyrical Chemistry,

The college is now setting up a college-based record label, CCN Records, with Cee Jay, which will support musicians with recording and production, videos, marketing, social media.
