Witches and wizards took over Loddon Junior School on Monday to mark the opening of the school's new Harry Potter-themed library.

Pupils and staff dressed as characters from the JK Rowling novels to celebrate the occasion, thought up by 10-year-old Alex Carver, who came up with the idea of transforming the library into Hogwarts’ great hall as part of a school competition.

Headteacher Mark Devereux said they wanted to make the library more special for the children to encourage them to read more.

Alex’s Harry Potter idea was the winning entry, and his vision included hanging candles from the ceiling, like the floating candles in the great hall, and turning each teacher into a character from the Harry Potter films, including his headteacher as Albus Dumbledore.

Mr Devereux said: “We had some really good entries, but we really liked Alex’s idea.

“It turned out we had a member of staff that looked like each character!

“It was a whole school project and each pupil made a candle to hang from the ceiling with their name on it. We thought that by creating a theme it would inspire the children to come in, have a look around and look at the books. We wanted to make it somewhere welcoming and warm, and somewhere the children would want to engage in reading.”

Pupils worked together to create the crests for each of the Harry Potter houses – Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin, along with Harry Potter’s owl and gargoyle faces to decorate the walls. The library was opened by Belinda Rapley, author of the Pony Detectives series.

Alex, who is in Year 6 at the school, said he was really pleased with how the library had turned out, especially as he is such a big Harry Potter fan.
