An infant school enjoyed a medieval makeover when knights in shining armour competed in a battle of jousting on its school yard.

Kinsale Infant School, in Hellesdon, near Norwich, held a community medieval day to give

children a flavour of what the era was like.

The school’s field, which is shared with Kinsale Junior School, became a courtyard of medieval activity, and featured horses and knights taking to the field for a bout of

jousting in front of an 800-strong crowd.

Pupils and staff also got into the spirit by turning up in a collection of their own medieval costumes, dressing as everything from kings and queens to dragons.

Headteacher Louise Robinson said: “It was a fantastic day and it was one of the biggest events we have held here.

“It really felt like we had gone back in time, the children really got into the medieval spirit with their great costumes and they were buzzing about the activities that were taking place.”

Black Knight Historical, a company which hires out individuals to portray historically-themed characters, started the day off by holding a horse riding show.

They were on hand for the rest of the day to speak to the children while in various medieval guises.

Children were able to take part in activities such as hobby horses jousting, archery and medieval story telling.

The event was held as part of the school’s history module for its children.

The students have been learning about castles as part of their summer topic, and staff decided to run the community day to give children a first-hand experience of the medieval era.
