The 40 sports students from City College Norwich (CCN) took part in the UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) course, which equips them to inform athletes - from amateur to elite - about the values of clean sport.

It is an area which is generally not covered by sports science students until degree level, but college staff opted to bring the learning forward.

Ben Brighton, a level three sports and exercise student, who hopes to pursue a career in coaching and youth development in professional football, said: 'The course has shown me how easy it is for people to get stuck into the trap of using performance enhancing drugs. It happens a lot more than we realise.'

Jason Fligg, CCN sports science lecturer, said by taking the qualifications, the students would help 'reduce the health risks to athletes and support the integrity of competitive sport'.
