Eaton youngster's toy sale to help penguins in the Atlantic Ocean

A kind-hearted youngster from Eaton has been selling her toys to help the RSPB help northern rockhopper penguins in the Atlantic Ocean.
Five-year-old Olivia Dutson also encouraged lots of her friends to donate toys, games and puzzles for her fundraising sale she held outside her home in Norvic Drive, Eaton, on Sunday, September 2.
The event raised £155.65, and now the Eaton Primary School pupil is planning a second toy sale later this month at her grandmother Geraldine Casimir’s home in Acle.
Her dad Ian Dutson said: “Olivia is a junior member of the RSPB and she is learning to read.
“She read about how the rockhopper penguins were dropping in numbers and that no-one knows why, and decided she wanted to help in some way.”
He said the RSPB was running a Wildlife Explorers Rockhopper Penguin Appeal and so the money Olivia has raised is being sent to the appeal.
Olivia’s three-year-old brother Daniel helped out at the September 2 sale along with Mr Dutson and Olivia’s mum Victoria, and Mr Dutson said it was great how many other people had also supported Olivia’s fundraising, including all her friends who had donated toys.
He said: “It was a really nice event and it was really nice how lots of people got involved. I think the whole street turned out to Olivia’s toy sale on the day.
“Olivia was really pleased with how much money was raised.”
He said, because they had so many toys donated, they have enough left over to do a second sale.
This will be part of the Acle Lions table sale on Sunday, September 23 at Crossway Terrace, Acle from 10am.
Between 100,000 and 50,000 northern rockhopper penguins live on the remote Tristan da Cunha islands in the Atlantic Ocean, but their numbers are dropping fast and the RSPB is fundraising to study the reasons for their decline.
