Students came together and used their initiative to support the Norwich Foodbank over Christmas.

Easton and Otley College student services team organised a collection at the end of term, and the response from staff and students meant four big boxes were donated.

Student services manager Beth Norman said: 'As a college we though we wanted to do something for people in need at Christmas.

'It's a time of year when you start to think of others and the hardships they are going through therefore we are delighted to be working with the Norwich Foodbank.

'Staff and students have really got on board.

'It's really important that as a college that we support the local community.

'Students here are the future so it's important that we make them to think of those around them in a positive way.

'They will then be able to take this away and make a difference to those around them when they leave us.'

The boxes were presented to Norwich Foodbank development manager Hannah Worsley from Norwich Foodbank at the college's annual Christmas carol service.

She said: 'Last December we received 18 tonnes of food just in that one month and that was enough to feed around 2000 people.

'This year we are hopeful that the local community we once again come up trumps.

'It tends to be quite quiet in January and February and busy in harvest time and at Christmas so we are always looking for support.

'Ultimately we don't mind when people help, just as long as they do.

'So it's brilliant that the college has got right behind us it really shows community spirit.

'It's great that students and staff have got involved. They are helping other people they don't even know but they are able to give them some food this Christmas.'

Apart from the Foodbank appeal, Easton and Otley students and staff are also supporting the Royal British Legion and the Priscilla Lodge for the rest of the academic year.
