Cyclists and walkers of all ages turned out in their droves to enjoy a day of fundraising for a children's charity.

More than 250 people donated their time and money at East Anglia's Children's Hospice's Ride for Life at Mayday Fields, near Brandon, today.

Now in its 23rd year, it was the second time the event had been held at the Thetford Forest venue, having previously been based at nearby Santon Downham.

Taking on routes from 10 to 50 miles, cyclists were able to enjoy the sights and sounds of the forest, while children took part in a new Treasure Trail, picking up a goody bag at the finish.

Carol Plunkett, EACH Norfolk fundraising manager, said Ride for Life was a key date in the charity's fundraising calendar.

'It gives us a chance to engage with people that support us regularly throughout the year and raise awareness of what we do, and our work with children.

'It's also a really nice family day out, with the new children's trail making sure younger children can get involved.

'Events like this raise about a fifth of our funding for our Quidenham Hospice so it's really important for us,' she added.

One family making the most of the day were the Davila-Smiths, from Bunwell.

Martin Davila-Smith was setting off on the 10 mile course with his sons Mateo, five, and Juan, eight.

He said they were returning after taking part last year.

'We did it last year and it was really good fun and exercise as we can all take part.

'It's also an important local charity and needs supports at events like this,' he added.

The Ride for Life event has raised more than £800,000 for EACH since it began.

In recent years it has raised around £36,000 annually.
