A charity golf day at Weston Park has helped to raise more than 3,000 for a Norwich school.

More than 80 people took to the course west of the city, as they battled it out in a fun day of golf.

The motivation behind it was to raise money for after school clubs at Harford Manor School in memory of a former pupil there.

Adrian and Marianne Stimpson, of Thorpe Marriott, lost their 16-year-old son Dominic to a long-term illness in March.

He had spent 11 happy years at school, in Ipswich Road, Norwich, and the presence of the school's drumming class at the funeral inspired Mr Stimpson's golfing partner Steve Mitchell to come up with the idea of Dominic's Day.

Mr Stimpson, 45, said: 'There was a drumming session from the Harford Manor School club in the funeral and he was blown away with it. Three to four days later he came up with the idea to raise funds for them.'

They decided that they wanted to raise money to help the school continue offering a range of extra-curricular activities at a time when funding is tough.

The pair, who play golf together at Weston Park most weekends, decided they would only go ahead with the day if they were sure they could raise more than 1,000.

Mr Stimpson said they had been overwhelmed by the response, which had seen them raise 3,206.

Last week the pair were able to present the cheque. Headteacher Paul Eteson said: 'We were totally amazed at the size of the cheque and in awe of the tremendous work and effort which we know went into organising the wonderful golf day on behalf of the school.

'The much needed funds will go directly to support our Extended Schools [clubs] activities next year.'

Mr Stimpson said: 'We are over the moon with the event and the reaction from the people that played on the day. It has encouraged us to do it again next year.'

A mix of golf club members as well as local businesses helped support the day. Some even travelled from Newmarket and York to be involved.

After the golfing there was a prize presentation and auction, with lots including a signed shirt from Norwich City Football Club and a signed shirt from Team Lotus' Formula One drivers.

All of the team captains also had the opportunity to enjoy a 10 minute drum lesson from the Harford Manor School.
