A couple who have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary have confided their secret to 60 years of happy marriage.
Frank and Lesley Seaman, who live on Caston Road in Thorpe St Andrew, met through mutual friends in 1951 and spent their first date at the Castle Museum before going to the cinema.
The happy couple were married at Thorpe St Andrew Parish church in 1954 and have two daughters, Tracy and Gillian, and three grandchildren; Keiron, 23, Francesca, 21 and Perry, 20.
The couple had a weekend of celebrations at the Ivy House at Oulton Broad, organised by their family, and still have some surprises in store today.
Mrs Seaman, who is 81, said: “When we were given that gift we were shocked and I got a bit emotional. It was out of the blue and things like this take your breath away.”
Mr Seaman spent two years in Northern Italy for his National Service and was a train driver, across East Anglia and London, for over 40 years.
The 83-year-old has fond memories of his time on the trains, but one day stands out more than the others.
In 1986, the train Mr Seaman was driving overheated near Swainsthorpe and caught fire. He managed to unhook the engine from the carriages carrying the passengers, before moving the engine safely up the track.
“The main thing was making sure the passengers got out of the carriage on the right side of the train so they wouldn’t get hit,” said Mr Seaman.
The retired couple now enjoy gardening, reading and watching soaps.
And what is the secret to spending so many years happily married to one another?
“We do argue sometimes, although it’s more nitpicking,” said Mrs Seaman, who used to work at the hotel school at City College.
“If it wasn’t a happy marriage I wouldn’t have stuck it this long. It’s about give and take, nobody can tell you they live together all these years without bickering. Everybody has a difference of opinion. But it’s surprising what a small glass of brandy and whisky can do for you.”
