More than 30 descendants of the original freemen of Norwich will be awarded the traditional honour on Friday.

A Freemans’ Court will be held in the council chamber at City Hall for 34 men and women to be admitted.

The honour dates back to the medieval era and gave people trading rights not permitted to ordinary residents. The privileges associated with being a freeman have since disappeared but the honour can be passed down from parent to child.

Jenny Lay, Lord Mayor of Norwich, said she was looking forward to the event and continuing a tradition which was part of the city’s “proud and rich heritage”.
