A deaf man has suffered a broken ankle and dislocated shoulder after being hit by a car while crossing King Street in Norwich.

The man, who is 60, was struck by the vehicle at the Alan Road Junction at around 8.50am today.

He was described as being 'profoundly deaf' and had been on his way to a support group at the Norwich Deaf Centre.

Angela Gosse, manager of the Rotary House for the Deaf, where the man lived, said: 'He is extremely shaken up and it is highly likely that he has broken some bones. But the ambulance service and police have been wonderful.'

A police spokesman said the driver of a blue Ford C-Max, which was involved in the accident, stopped at the scene.

The spokesman said it did 'not appear' as though the driver had been arrested.

An ambulance service spokesman said: 'A rapid response vehicle, a doctor from Norfolk Accident and Rescue Service and ambulance crew attended.

'A pedestrian had been involved in a collision with a car. A man in his 50s with a suspected ankle injury has been taken to Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.'

• The road has now reopened to traffic.
