The Lord Mayor's Procession is renowned for its floats, but would the event be the same without its carnival atmosphere?

The walking and dancing groups have always been an integral part of the event from the very beginning.

The Chermond Gymnastics group has been involved in every procession since they were started again in 1977.

Cherie Alcock, joint director of coaching, said: 'The crowds seem to like it, we do not have to try very hard to encourage them.

'It can be a long walk, but everyone on the route appreciates your efforts'

She said that everyone should get involved and gave some advice to those considering entering: 'Once you think of a theme then it falls into place and you can get your whole group involved in planning and put your own stamp on the day.'

In recent years the parade has had a hint of South America about it, with the carnival-inspired artists who perform.

Hej Jones, musical director at Norwich Samba, said: 'We pride ourselves on being instrumental in the way the procession has been arranged'

The group has generated a carnival vibe at the procession for the last 15 years and is now a staple of the event. Over those years he said there had been an increase in the number of groups walking and dancing the route.

Mr Jones lived in the home of carnival, Rio de Janerio, Brazil, for six years, and there said the Lord Mayor's procession was different as no floats were allowed in Rio.

He encouraged those on the fence about signing up to do it, saying: 'Absolutely get involved, the whole idea is to get as many people taking part as possible.'

He added: 'Being involved all these years you forget what a massive experience it is performing in front of all those people.

'The look of delight on their faces makes it all worth it.'
